Finding the Light in the Yuck: Practical Tools for Navigating Life's Tough Moment

January 23, 20255 min read

Let’s face it—life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes, we wake up feeling off, heavy, or just downright blah. Whether it’s the post-holiday slump, perimenopause, or simply the weight of everything happening in the world, these moments can feel overwhelming. The good news? You don’t have to let the yuck consume you.

Today, I want to share some practical tools and mindset shifts to help you find light in those tough times, along with ways to support others who may be struggling too. We’re all in this together, and a little light can go a long way.

1. Acknowledge the Yuck

The first step in navigating difficult emotions is acknowledging them. Ignoring or suppressing feelings only makes them louder in the long run. Take a moment to name what you’re feeling: “I’m feeling anxious,” “I’m frustrated,” or “I’m exhausted.” Recognizing and validating your emotions is an act of self-compassion that opens the door for healing.

Try This: Write down what’s weighing on you in a journal or voice memo. It’s okay if it’s messy or doesn’t make sense—just let it out.

2. Shift Your Focus to the Good

Acknowledging the hard stuff doesn’t mean you have to stay stuck there. Challenge yourself to also notice the bright spots around you. It could be something small, like a beautiful sunrise, a warm cup of tea, or a kind text from a friend. These moments of joy and peace are everywhere—you just have to look for them.

Try This: Start a gratitude practice. Each morning or evening, jot down three things you’re grateful for. Over time, this habit trains your brain to naturally seek the good.

3. Move Your Body

When life feels heavy, movement can be a game-changer. Whether it’s a gentle walk, a dance session in your living room, or stretching for a few minutes, physical activity helps release endorphins and shift your energy. Bonus points if you can get outside and soak up some fresh air and sunshine.

Try This: Set a timer for 10 minutes and do whatever movement feels good to you. Don’t overthink it—just start.

4. Connect with Others

You don’t have to navigate tough times alone. Reach out to a friend, family member, or community group to share what’s on your heart. Sometimes, simply being heard can lift a huge weight. And remember, if someone in your life is struggling, offering a listening ear or a kind gesture can make a world of difference.

Try This: Send a text to someone you care about. It could be as simple as, “Hey, just checking in—how’s your day going?”

5. Try a Grounding or Relaxation Tool

When life feels chaotic, grounding techniques can help you feel more centered. Deep breathing, meditation, or listening to a calming audio can bring a sense of peace and control to your day.

Try This: Here’s an audio I recorded recently that’s been so helpful for me during heavy moments.

This hypnosis audio is intended for relaxation and personal development purposes only. It is not a substitute for professional medical, psychological, or therapeutic advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Please do not listen to this audio while driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring your full attention. If you have a history of epilepsy or mental health conditions, please consult a professional before using this resource. Use in a safe and comfortable environment where you won't be disturbed for the duration.

6. Reflect on Triggers and Give Your Past a Voice

When a situation—whether it’s political news, a stressful day at work, a family disagreement, or even a moment of road rage—triggers you, pause and ask yourself: What is this really about? Often, these feelings stem from a deeper wound. Your body remembers past experiences, even if you don’t consciously recall them.

Is this situation bringing back a memory of feeling unsafe, unheard, or overstepped? Take time to sit with those feelings and imagine giving your past self the voice they didn’t have. What would you say to those people who crossed your boundaries or dismissed you? Say it out loud, write it down, or even compose a letter that you’ll never send. This process can be incredibly healing.

Afterward, offer love and compassion to your past self. Remind them of their worth, tell them how proud you are of their strength, and commit to caring for them now. For me, not having my voice heard or my boundaries respected left me feeling angry and unsafe. But giving a voice to that past version of me has been a powerful step in my healing.

When we heal these old wounds, we create change—not just within ourselves but also in our families, communities, and the world. The ripple effect is real, and it starts with you.

7. Practice Radical Self-Compassion

You are human, and it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Be as kind to yourself as you would be to a dear friend. Take breaks, rest when you need to, and give yourself permission to not have it all figured out.

Try This: Look in the mirror and say something kind to yourself, like, “I’m doing the best I can, and that’s enough.”

8. Support Someone Else

One of the most beautiful ways to lift yourself up is by lifting others. Offering support, whether it’s through a kind word, a small act of service, or simply holding space for someone, can create a ripple effect of positivity.

Try This: Share this post or a message of encouragement with someone who might need it today. Let them know you’re thinking of them. Go buy coffee from a small little place or visit a small business who can benefit from your purchase. Donate to places that align with your values. You have power in this.

You Are Not Alone

If you’re feeling heavy, lost, or stuck, please know that you’re not alone. We all go through challenging seasons, and it’s okay to ask for help or lean on others. The key is to keep moving forward, even in small ways, and to remember that brighter days are ahead. Reach out to counselors, therapist, friends, coaches or those who can love, support and fill your cup when you need it. There is no shame in seeking out assistance.

You are incredible, magical, capable, and so worthy of love. Let’s look for the light together—the world needs your beautiful glow. Sending love and hugs your way today.💕
