Relaxation When Life is Really Stressful

Finding Calm Amid Chaos: My Journey to Balance, Aromatherapy, and Mindful Relaxation

Finding ways to relax when life feels overwhelming can be a real challenge, can't it? If we had it all figured out, stress and unhappiness would never stand a chance! But here’s the thing—we can't just sweep those feelings under the rug. Instead, we need to acknowledge them, say hello to the "dark side," thank them for showing up, and then let them go. This way, we avoid getting stuck in a cycle of negativity.

We've all heard the phrases "BE POSITIVE!" or "STOP BEING NEGATIVE," but let's be real—that's total BS. Those feelings exist for a reason. Maybe we’re grieving, going through a rough patch at work, or just feeling a bit off. And that’s okay. You don't have to feel guilty for experiencing these emotions. But, and it’s a big but, when we dwell in that negativity for too long—whether it's weeks, months, or even years—constantly telling ourselves and everyone else how much life sucks, we keep it sucking.

Read that again. You, me, WE have to flip the script in our heads. We can look for the tiniest things to be grateful for and use them to shift our mindset. Earlier this year, when my mom’s health was declining rapidly, we were in the midst of a global pandemic, and my brick-and-mortar business was first shut down and then operating on minimal hours. It sucked. But I’m so grateful for the moments I got to spend with her—at the hospital, at home, driving her to appointments—and most importantly, I had the time.

Yes, it was stressful, scary, sad, and sometimes completely overwhelming, but gratitude saved my mindset. I started to notice the small things: the sun shining, flowers blooming, my daily walks and jogs that became my comfort and solace. I became more grateful for my kids and my husband, who stepped in to help me in any way they could, even if things weren’t “perfect.” That perfection monster sure knows when to show up, doesn’t it? But I digress.

I leaned heavily on my self-care practices during this time. I used my essential oil inhaler, wore my favorite oily perfume and lip balm, which all helped me feel grounded and relaxed. I incorporated EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) as a pattern disrupter—check it out if you haven't tried it! I journaled a lot and committed to jogging or walking EVERY SINGLE DAY for at least 30 minutes. As of this post, I’m on day 277, and it’s been a huge part of my self-care this past year.

I don’t have all the answers, but I do know this: endlessly scrolling through social media or news feeds won't help you find peace, calm, or lower your cortisol levels. Maybe it’s time to pick one thing—just one—and try it for two weeks to see what it does for you. There’s no right or wrong way, just pick something and commit to it for yourself, your sanity, your health, your happiness, and your joy.

Because joy is where we find our strength. Life without joy is just so sad. Much love to you during these times, and know that I’m always here to help with self-care tools, tips, aromatherapy recipes, and ideas. You’ve got this!

Calm Diffuser or Roll-On Essential Oil Recipe

  • 1 drop Sandalwood

  • 2 drops Bergamot

  • 1 drop Sweet Orange

For Diffuser: Add the essential oils to your diffuser and enjoy. I recommend diffusing for 15-30 minutes, then turning off the diffuser and letting the aroma work its magic.

For Roll-On Blend: Use a roller bottle and add in your essential oils. If using topically, I recommend using FCF Bergamot or Bergapten-Free Bergamot to avoid increasing your skin's sensitivity to the sun. Fill the bottle with Jojoba or your carrier oil of choice. Cap the top and gently rock the bottle to mix your oils before rolling onto your wrists, neck, or chest as you would any perfume.

Breathe deeply, my friend, and enjoy! Joy is where it’s at ❤️🦋
